Rock Band: Your rise to virtual stardom.

November 13, 2007

There's barely a week to go before you can get your hands on a copy of Rock Band, get your group together and start your rise to virtual superstardom. We like to think it will change your life just a little, or at least keep you off the streets for a long while. We understand there's a lot of anticipation building over the release, so as a public service we offer a list of ten things to do while you're waiting for Rock Band: 1: Polish your air-guitar technique. Remember how you jumped around your bedroom pretending to be in Aerosmith with the CD blasting, so it never mattered if you were in time or not? Now it will. 2: Canvas your friends for the best people to be in your Rock Band. See, it's just like forming a real band, but with one difference: You don't have to let someone you don't like play bass just because s/he owns the practice space.

3: Watch a film of your favorite band performing, even if that means sitting through “The Song Remains the Same” for the 100th time. Look for some great onstage moves to lift from your favorite performers. But no, you won't have any occasion to ask if anybody remembers laughter. 4: Get out of the house. It may be your last chance for a long while. 5: Brush up on your stock of drummer jokes. (What's the difference between a drummer and a savings bond?) 6: Get the new Radiohead album without paying for it. Hey, it was their idea, not ours. 7: Recite the entire lyrics of Nine Inch Nails' “Machine” to the next telemarketer who calls. This won't help you at all with Rock Band, but it's fun. 8: Search the web for that video clip of Van Halen turning “Jump” into a total trainwreck. Not only is it truly priceless, but it will make you feel better about your own playing.

9: Familiarize yourself with the crazy drum fills in “Tom Sawyer” by Rush. This will help you later on—unless you know them already, in which case you're a terminal music geek with too much time on your hands (in other words, part of our target audience). 10: Put the lime in the coconut, and call us in the morning.

Bang Camaro: A triple dose of sheer rock velocity!

October 25, 2007

Come out and play Rockband 11:00am-6:00pm and check out a free live performance by Bang Camaro! Bang Camaro is scheduled to play at 1:00pm in front of the Zesiger Sports and Fitness Center 120 Vassar St. at MIT in Cambridge MA, Friday October 26th, 2007.

When the Rock Band bus tour pulls into MIT this Friday, we'll be coming in with a triple dose of sheer rock velocity: Our special guests will be one of Boston's most head-shakin', fist-wavin' bands, Bang Camaro.

If you've never seen the band, we'll ruin the surprise: All those people who come onstage to sing—between 15 and 20 people, depending on who's awake and available—really are part of the lineup. Just imagine the celestial harmonies from your favorite Def Leppard album (and don't tell us you haven't got one) done before your very eyes. “We usually come out first and play an instrumental,” explains guitarist Bryn Bennett, who doubles as a software developer at Harmonix Music. “When all the people rush onstage, we see the jaws drop. They can't figure if they're all in the band, or if we're like a rap group bringing out our posse.”

Bang Camaro's founders swear they had every intention of forming a nice, normal, alternative rock band—then something went terribly right. “We kept trying to write indie rock songs, but then we'd mess around after rehearsals. We realized we were having a way better time learning the 'Bark at the Moon' solo, or all these other old Randy Rhodes riffs.” Turned out they couldn't get away from the music they grew up loving. As Bryn explains, “Alex and I [cofounder Alex Necochea] grew up in small towns, where metal held on longer than it really should have.”

Formed barely two years ago, the band caught on in a hurry: Their first gig was in a friend's basement; the second was at the sold-out Paradise club opening for local hero Bleu (who liked Bang Camaro so much he wrote a song for them). Word spread via MP3's posted on their Myspace page; and by September of last year they were playing the Boston Music Awards, where they got nominated for best new band and song of the year. Even the cynics in the Boston press were quick to take notice: The Boston Globe's Joan Anderman noted that “the boys in Bang Camaro have melted into a single beer-swilling, headbanging mass of

testosterone.” During St. Patrick's week this year, Bang Camaro had the only local CD in Newbury Comics' top five that wasn't by the Dropkick Murphys.

The band is just back from its first West Coast tour, where they had the quintessential Hollywood experience of standing on Sunset Strip and hearing their CD blasting from a passing car. They also got to play two of California's most famous clubs, the Troubadour in Los Angeles and the Great American Music Hall in San Francisco. So come out and catch Bang Camaro now, before the crowds get as packed as the band lineup.

Rockband Tour 10/26/07, 11:00am -6:00pm
Live performance by Bang Camaro 1:00pm
